There is nothing better than exploring the island on foot, but there are other interesting alternatives as well. Here are some ideas:
Impressive Viewpoints
La Gomera boasts a network of viewpoints that will take your breath away. Some of the highlights include:
-
- Abrante Viewpoint
- Morro de Agando Viewpoint
- Punta del Belete Viewpoint
These viewpoints offer panoramic views that capture the essence of the island. You can find more information about these and other viewpoints at www.lagomera.travel
They are accessible at any time, and some, like Santo Viewpoint on the way to Valle Gran Rey, offer stunning movie-like sunsets. Others, like Abrante Viewpoint with its glass floor, will make you feel like you’re floating while gazing at the outline of the neighboring island.
Museums and Information Centers
La Gomera also has a network of museums where you can learn about the island’s rich history and culture:
-
- La Gomera Archaeological Museum
- La Gomera Ethnographic Museum
- Palm Honey Interpretation Center
- Las Loceras Center
- Garajonay National Park Information Center
The latter, recently opened, offers original ways to help you discover the island. It’s a must-visit that will enhance your experience of every corner of La Gomera.
Monuments
The island is also home to various monuments, such as the Columbus monuments in San Sebastián de La Gomera and the Silbo Monument, celebrating the famous whistling language of the island, which we’ll tell you more about in another article.
We offer a route; feel free to ask us!
Water Activities
There is also a wide range of water activities for those seeking adventure on the sea. Whale and dolphin watching is one of the most popular.
La Gomera holds a special privilege: in addition to more than 20 species that can be observed here, many of them choose this island to live year-round.
With mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine, you can enjoy water activities nearly all year long. Snorkeling, kayaking, boat trips, stand-up paddleboarding, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, and even leisurely coastal walks while savoring the island’s rich cuisine are all on offer.
La Gomera Hiking Trails Network
However, we believe nothing beats the experience of exploring La Gomera’s hiking trails network. With over 600 kilometers of paths, this network connects every corner of the island and offers levels of difficulty for everyone. You won’t know which one to choose!
Walking these trails is like stepping through history itself. It’s easy to imagine how the ancient Gomerans, the island’s first inhabitants, used these paths. Later, European settlers’ mules and donkeys trod these same routes, loaded with grains destined for the mills to be turned into precious gofio.
The trails also bear witness to the passage of grapes in the harvest season, heading to the wineries, or sugar cane en route to the sugar mills that once existed here.
If these trails could talk, they would also tell us of potters carrying their clay vessels, charcoal makers transporting charcoal, and men and women hauling firewood from the mountains to the coast.
It’s not hard to imagine the hustle and bustle of people who once walked these trails, the history they hold that has been passed down to us. Walking them and uncovering their secrets is a way to fall in love with the island even more.
And let’s not forget the spectacular views. Walking these trails offers landscapes that would be impossible to appreciate from a car. La Gomera on foot is felt and experienced in a much deeper way.
