How to Get to La Gomera

A Complete Guide for Travelers

The experience of traveling to La Gomera begins long before you set foot on the island.

Getting to the island requires a bit of time and patience, and the journey is part of the adventure.

Here’s a detailed guide to help make your trip to La Gomera as smooth as possible.

Step 1: Getting to Tenerife

To reach La Gomera, you first need to fly to Tenerife, which has two international airports:

    • Tenerife South Airport (TFS)
    • Tenerife North Airport (TFN)

Step 2: Traveling Within Tenerife

If you’ve landed at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), the best option is to head to the Port of Los Cristianos and take the ferry to La Gomera. You have the following options:

1. By Taxi: The Port of Los Cristianos is about 15-20 minutes away from the airport.

2. By Bus: Titsa line 40,  www.titsa.es , will take you directly to Los Cristianos. From the bus stop on Avenida Juan Carlos I, you can either walk 1.2 km to the port or take a taxi.

3. Direct Transfer: There is a direct transport service from the airport to your accommodation in La Gomera. This option is convenient as it takes care of your luggage and ferry tickets. One of the companies offering this service is Autobuses Mesa www.autobusesmesa.es

If you’ve landed at Tenerife North Airport (TFN), the best option is to take a connecting flight to La Gomera.

Binter Canarias www.bintercanarias.com offers two daily flights to La Gomera. The flight takes about 30 minutes and lands at La Gomera Airport in Alajeró. www.bintercanarias.com .

This bird’s-eye view of the island is sure to impress, giving you a sneak peek of the place you’re about to explore.

A fun fact about the airport: when it was decided to build it, finding a large enough flat area on the island was challenging. Eventually, the municipality of Alajeró adapted the current location, constructing a 1.5 km runway.

Step 3: Taking the Ferry to La Gomera

Currently, there are two ferry companies:

Both offer around three daily trips (four in summer), and the crossing takes approximately 50-60 minutes. The ferries arrive in the capital of La Gomera, San Sebastián de La Gomera.

If your flight’s arrival doesn’t match the ferry departure time, you can enjoy some time in the nearby town of Los Cristianos. It’s a great excuse to grab a delicious ice cream or a “tinto de verano” while you start your vacation.

A fun fact: the ferry journey used to take half a day. Now, it’s much faster, but the trip is still enjoyable, as you’ll start to see La Gomera appear on the horizon, and with a bit of luck, you might spot some dolphins.

Step 4: Getting to Your Accommodation in La Gomera

From the Port of San Sebastián de La Gomera:

1. Direct Transfer: If you’ve booked this service, you’ll be taken directly to your accommodation.

2. Taxis: There is a taxi stand right at the port.

3. Buses: GuaguaGomera www.guaguagomera.com offers services to various parts of the island.

4. Car Rental: Several options are available. You can check www.lagomera.travel in the Practical Information section for details.

From La Gomera Airport

The airport is about 45 minutes from the capital by taxi or bus. You can take a taxi or use GuaguaGomera services to reach your final destination.

First Steps in San Sebastián de La Gomera

Once you arrive, you can enjoy this charming town. We recommend a historical tour of the old town to learn more about the island’s rich history.

One thing that stands out is the tranquility; it’s as if San Sebastián sleeps peacefully and only wakes up when the first ferry arrives at 9:30 a.m. The calm returns once the last ferry leaves the port.
